Description:
Youth Basic Woodworking is a hands-on, skill-building class designed to introduce young makers to the fundamentals of woodworking in a safe, supportive, and age-appropriate environment. This course mirrors the content of our adult Basic Woodworking class but is paced and taught specifically for youth learners.
The class runs over multiple sessions, meeting 2 hours per day from 3:30–5:30 PM, allowing students to stay engaged, learn safely, and build confidence without being overwhelmed.
Students will learn how to square up materials, perform accurate measuring and stock layout, and understand the basics of wood movement. Core joinery skills will be introduced, including box joints, rabbet joints, and dado joints, giving students real-world building techniques they can apply to future projects.
Youth participants will receive hands-on instruction using key shop machines—including the table saw, jointer, planer, drill press, band saw, and sanders—with a strong emphasis on safety, supervision, and proper technique. We’ll also introduce essential power hand tools such as the router and oscillating sander, along with basic hand tools, helping students develop coordination, patience, and problem-solving skills.
The class also covers sanding techniques, surface preparation, and finishing, so students leave with projects they’re proud of—both structurally and visually.
